021 - Phone and Action

[Phone] Okay so I've got a few things that people requested from the forge? I can bring them by houses or you can come pick them up whenever. Basically if you requested something, it's probably done. So... yeah.

This is usually the part where I'd be taking requests, and I can still do that, but I'm working on a project right now so there's gonna be kind of a delay before I can start working on stuff. But yeah! For all the new people I've been hearing around, I'm Hiccup, I have a forge, and I can make weapons, armor, and possibly random stuff. Just let me know and we can work something out. I just got a bunch of tools back from home so it'll make making some really good stuff a lot easier.

[Action, after school] [Hiccup is working at the forge, in the backyard of 339 Brady Lane. He's actually doing something he doesn't usually do given the requests he usually gets. He's working on some kind of mechanism to do... something. It's a little uncertain. But there's a couple of diagrams of car engines.]

No, it's okay. Mind me asking why you want a weapon if you don't have any experience with them?

I've...I've heard that things can get dangerous in Mayfield. People can get attacked and hurt, and I'd rather be prepared.

(She's still wondering whether that's how he got the prosthetic, but trust her to be too careful to ask about it.)

[Hiccup nods.]

Well... you're right. But if you don't know how to use a weapon then it's not going to be a whole lot of help.

[He looks around and finds a nice long dagger. It's not as long as the short sword was, but it looks a little easier to handle. He hands it over.] Try this. Don't think of it as a sword or a dagger or a weapon, just think of it as something to stab something with in case things get dicey. Trying to get fancy will only get you hurt.

(She tries a few stabs with it.)

Something like that? It doesn't seem very hard to use.

Yeah, that's fine. Daggers are pretty basic, but there can be a lot of technique to them if you keep working with it. But that'll help you out if something... happens.

[prpl_assistant]

Thanks very much for the dagger Hiccup. Is there anything you'd like in return for it?

[He shrugs.]

Whatever you think is fair is fine. I don't usually ask for money or anything.

How about a meal? I'm not exactly a master chef, but I can cook you something that you've never tasted before.

That's fine. That'd be pretty cool, actually.

Alright then. Just let me know when is comfortable for you then. I won't be free until the day after tomorrow, so anytime after that is good.

Thank you very much for helping me Hiccup. Did you make all those weapons yourself?

Hey, it's no problem. Yeah, I make them all myself. I figure it's my way of helping out everyone in town, you know?

Wow. That's very responsible of you, Hiccup. When I was your age, I was more interested in reading my books than helping out in the house. How old are you exactly?

[Hiccup shrugs.] Sixteen.

[prpl_assistant]

Would it happen to be normal in your world to know weaponry by that age? Most 16 year olds in my world would be hanging out at the mall and going skating.

I come from a viking village that up until the time I left was constantly attacked by dragons, so... yes.

[prpl_assistant]

Dra...dragons?
(She's starting to wonder whether there's any child here who lived a normal human life, where the only dangerous things were homework and the bully at recess.)

Yup, dragons.

[He's used to people being surprised at the dragon part by now.]

Apparently most of the other people here don't have them, but I always did.

(She shakes her head, slightly amused.)

I guess it's like how there's this world that only has talking colorful ponies as its residents with a flying unicorn as the ruler. We're all from different environments and times.

It would definitely explain why you're good at making weapons though. Did you...did you manage to kill any dragons yourself?

[He smiles and laughs a little.]

For the longest time, no. It was a really big deal, because my village was fighting the dragons for centuries and you were nobody unless you could kill a dragon, and I... wouldn't. I actually ended up taming one and learning to ride it and... well it's a really long story but in the end we managed to kill the biggest dragon, and without it controlling all the other dragons, they were really friendly. So yes. In the end, I killed one dragon.

And when I was 16, I was cramming for exams and worrying about what to wear to the prom. (A small chuckle.)

You're certainly a very brave and helpful person Hiccup. Thanks so much for offering your services to the rest of Mayfield, especially to those of us who aren't fighters from where we came from. Give me a call when you want to come over for lunch.
