014 - Action and Phone

[Klaus is droned. That much was obvious as soon as it happened. Hiccup has no idea if it's temporary or permanent, but either way it's depressing.

And then Hiccup ran into Astrid. The way she said hello immediately tipped him off to the fact that she was gone too. Astrid never talked like that.

So there it was. The man he looked up to as a father and the girl... well. They were gone. Talking to empty shells of them made him want to go somewhere quiet and smash his head against a wall. He didn't, of course. That would be stupid.

So instead he spends most of his time at the forge or just away from the house.

Hiccup, for the purposes of this post, can be found at the forge (339 Brady Lane), or in the park, just quietly sitting on a bench and watching the birds.]

Anyone who asked me to make them stuff, I've got most of it done now. Just give me an address and I can drop it off, or you can come by the forge and pick it up.

Anyone else who might want something just let me know.

Uh... what's your name?

[Because he's only ever talked to her on the phone, he hasn't met her in person yet.]

Oh. Right. I talked to you on the phone once. I'm Hiccup.

[Now looking you over, well you don't look injured or beaten up.]

[Well there is the issue of the missing leg, but that wasn't Lucrezia's fault.]

[Riiight....Well he doesn't seem to be abused or anything. Good.

There's a slight pause...]


....what's...she like? Living with her, I mean.

Right now it's not so bad. She doesn't have her spark or anything so we've got a truce going on that's been working okay for the past month or so. I... do nice things for her every now and then. She always seems so surprised when I do. I can understand why, by all rights I should... [He trails off and shrugs, looking away as he does so. He's getting dangerously close to we don't talk about it territory.]

[He's quiet. He doesn't want to talk about it. He hasn't told anyone what happened. Klaus, Lucrezia, Hiccup; only the three of them know. They don't talk about it.

Because talking about it means remembering it and he's remembering it now, like it only happened yesterday even though it was a month ago, it's a vivid scar on his memory that he does his best to forget.]

[That silence is enough though....she just...can tell it's horrible. Her voice is quiet...and very very sad.]

[It's a long moment before Hiccup finally responds, and when he does, it's very, very quiet.]

She... put that wasp thing in Klaus, and she got her voice back... and she told him... told him to... [his voice falters for a moment and he falls silent for a minute before taking a deep breath and continuing.] She made him torture me. He had to. Had to cut off all my fingers. Then all my toes. Then my legs at the knee. And my arms at the elbow. I. I died before he could get any further than that.

[And....Agatha pauses....and then without thinking you're being hugged.]

I'm so sorry.

[It's quiet and sad and .....understanding. She...knows her mother. And just how horrible the woman can be.]

[He almost doesn't react to the hug. He's just very quiet. Concentrating on not crying. Not losing it. Not remembering. He doesn't want to remember.

But he does. He remembers it far too well.]

[Slowly, with effort, Hiccup starts thinking about other things.]

Here I mostly make weapons and armor at the forge. I spent a while taking the appliances at the house apart to figure out how they worked though.

What sort of tools do you have?

Yeah, I've been doing that too. But without my spark I usually just end up setting something on fire.

Technically it's not mine, but I'm the only one who uses it so it kind of is.

[He describes some of the tools he has, pretty basic stuff, but he uses them very well.]

Probably should hold off until you get it back.
